What is the purpose of a nursing bra?

As mentioned earlier, nursing bras are one of the most important tools to have as you set off on your breastfeeding journey. Despite that, many women procrastinate purchasing one, as they feel that other things are more important.

A nursing bra is a bra that makes breastfeeding accessible and comfortable for the mom and the baby, no matter where they are. These bras typically feature drop-down clips or a pulldown strap that easily exposes the breast, so that the baby can secure a strong latch.

While you technically can pull down a regular bra, it is much more awkward and is sure to become something that you will dread. When you dread breastfeeding, you avoid it at all costs. When you avoid breastfeeding, it leads to engorgement, leakage, and an unhappy baby!

What to consider when purchasing a nursing bra?

Before we go any further, let us clarify one thing (in case we haven’t already). All breastfeeding and pumping moms NEED a nursing bra. No questions asked!

Now that you understand the importance of having a nursing bra, let’s talk about what you need to think about when purchasing a nursing bra.

1. What is your budget?

Because there are so many things to take into consideration when budgeting for a new baby, it is important to ensure that you shop within your means.

While nursing bras aren’t something you want to cheap out on, there are affordable options that will meet your standards without breaking the bank.

2. What size do you need?

In an easy world, you would simply be able to try on the nursing bra in store to ensure the fit. Unfortunately, in this day and age, there are 2 issues with that.

The first issue is that the pregnant and postpartum body is frequently changing. This means that the bra that fits you perfectly at 7 months pregnant, will not do the same when you are 3 months postpartum.

This situation is why nursing bra material must be made of soft fabric that does not irritate or dig into the skin. Ideally, the bra closure will be an adjustable hook and eye, allowing for tightening and expansion as regularly as is needed.

The second issue is that the majority of clothing shopping is done online. While returns are often possible, they are a pain! It is much easier to make sure that you get the right size in the first place.

Always be sure to utilize online sizing guides when available, and keep an eye out for company recommendations to “size up” or “size down”

3. What fabric do you prefer?

Once you find the nursing bra that you love, you will probably wear it every single day. It’s crucial that the fabric of your bra does not itch or cause irritation, and that it is not restrictive.

4. Is there easy access for nursing?

This is probably the most important factor, as this is the reason you are wearing the bra in the first place! Commonly, access to the breast is either due to drop-down clips, or a pull-down plunging neckline. Consider which option you would prefer.

5. How does the bra make you feel?

The most commonly overlooked factor is how the bra impacts your confidence. Just because you are stepping into a mothering role doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice all feelings of empowerment and sexiness! Don’t settle for a bra that is frumpy and dull- find the one that is sleek, beautiful, and reminds you of the power you hold!
